OpenSource in the past was not known for powerful solutions and The problem I often encounter is when they hear FREE they think useless. It may even spawn a whole new breed of affordable renderers once their manufacturers realize the huge potential market they got at their fingertips. The newly discovered render engines also offered me a whole branch of interesting possibilities, and with them getting better day by day, it became an unbeatable combo! Having commercial alternatives for the render engine would be an interesting possibility to add to blender’s never-ending list of features. I never went back to them (commercial 3d apps) and adapted all my workflow around blender and it’s been my best move. In my personal case I switched from Max-final render, to blender-and the free renderers available (Indigo, yafray, kT, etc), firstly because of not being able to pay for updates anymore, but then I experienced in my own flesh and bone how powerful blender was and how faster I was able to model in it. I think commercial render engines should start looking at blender as a possible candidate for their standalone renderers. It definitely would be a cheaper alternative, and blender’s modeling capabilities for the different fields (arch-vis, industrial, mechanical, organic) have proven to be at the same level or above the ones found in high-end commercial/price-bloated 3d applications. Cekuhnen is picturing a very interest concept here.
